  • The Royal Chapel at Versailles, built in the final years of King Louis XIV's life. Entry to the chapel was not allowed when we visited, due to ongoing renovations.

  • The Mercury Room at Versailles. Part of the King's State Apartment. King Louis XIV's coffin was displayed in this room for 9 days following his death in 1715.
  • The Apollo Room at Versailles. Part of the King's State Apartment. On the wall is a 1702 copy of the most famous portrait of King Louis XIV, by Hyacinthe Rigaud. The original, painted in 1701, now resides in the Louvre Museum.

  • The magnificent Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, occupying the central expanse on the back side of the palace. It was here that the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, ending World War 1.
