  • A statue near the north wing entrance of Versailles. Who knew that watering horses could be so dramatic?
  • King Louis XIV, I presume. With Napoleon Bonaparte in the background!
  • A very fancy table at Versailles.
  • The Room of Abundance at Versailles, where refreshments were served. Part of the King's State Apartment.
  • The Hercules Room at Versailles. Part of the King's State Apartment.
  • Detailed statue of Louis XIV - interestingly, depicted as a Roman emporer - sculpted by Jean Warin in 1650, and located in the Venus Room at Versailles. Part of the King's State Apartment.
  • The Diana Room at Versailles, in which King Louis XIV played billiards (reportedly with much skill). Part of the King's State Apartment. Diana is the Roman version of Artemis, twin sister of Apollo, and goddess of the hunt.
  • The Mars Room at Versailles, used as a guard room. Part of the King's State Apartment.

  • The Mercury Room at Versailles. Part of the King's State Apartment. King Louis XIV's coffin was displayed in this room for 9 days following his death in 1715.
  • The Apollo Room at Versailles. Part of the King's State Apartment. On the wall is a 1702 copy of the most famous portrait of King Louis XIV, by Hyacinthe Rigaud. The original, painted in 1701, now resides in the Louvre Museum.
  • The Apollo Room at Versailles. Part of the King's State Apartment. King Louis XIV's grand silver throne used to stand on the raised platform, before it was melted down in 1689, to be replaced by a succession of gilded chairs.
  • An imperial-looking gentleman.
  • The War Room at Versailles, an anteroom at the north end of the Hall of Mirrors.
  • The magnificent Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, occupying the central expanse on the back side of the palace. It was here that the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, ending World War 1.
  • A window looking out on the gardens, from the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
  • A gilded chandelamp. Lampelier? I just made those up.
